The Devon ABF Charity Day at Dainton Park Golf Club
John Marsh has written with details of the Farmer’s boy’s Golf Society. They organise 3 events per year – spring, summer and autumn meetings, with the summer meeting being the main event where members compete for DERR trophies. They also enter teams into a number of ABF Charity events, play The Slashers for the Burma Cup and enter the Rifles Regimental Golf Day (which they have won twice). New members are always welcome.
This year’s Spring Meeting was in April and the Summer Meeting on 30/31 May is already fully subscribed, but for the sake of completeness the full list of 2024 events is as follows:
- 23 May 2024 – The Bristol ABF Charity Day at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club. Our 6th year of entering and we have entered 2 x 4-ball teams since 2019. It is a great course and an excellent event and it would be good if we could enter 2 teams again in 2024. Following the widespread surprise/incredulity at last year’s winning score of 129, future events will require recognised handicaps
- 25 April 2024 – The Spring meeting at Cumberwell Park Golf Club, organised by John Ledgister. As in previous years, this event includes “fun Texas Scramble warm-up” on the par 3 course.
- 30/31 May 2024 – The Annual Summer Meeting. A week earlier than usual due to the DERR 65th Anniversary celebrations at Hayling Island. We will be returning to Erlestoke for the first time since 2013. The Club has new owners who have invested significantly in improvements and have offered us a very competitive deals of £50 for coffee and bacon rolls, 18 holes and a 2 course meal. An informal practise/warm-up on the PM of 30 May with the main competition for the Regimental Trophies on 31 May.
- 14 June 2024 – The Burma Cup at Thornbury Golf Club (5 miles North of the M4/M5 junction). The Slashers turn to host. Many thanks to Steve Mac for volunteering to be our team captain.
- 17 July 2024 – The Devon ABF Charity Day at Dainton Park Golf Club being organised by Trevor Ongley. Always a great event – lovely course and fantastic carvery.
- 16 August 2024 – A class of dates between The Slashers Annual Meeting at Puckrup Hall Golf Club (Tewksbury) and the Mercian Regiment Charity Day at Rufford Park. Arthur Christian will act as the Farmers Boys administrative coordinator.
- 20 September 2024 – The Dorset ABF Charity Day at Rushmore Golf Club. 2021 was the first year this event was held. The 2022 event was cancelled due to the period of official mourning for Her late Majesty and we were unable to raise a team in 2023. It is an excellent event and a lovely course, so it would be good if we could enter this year.
- 7 October 2024 – The Rifles Regimental Golf Meeting at South Winchester GC. We have been entering teams since 2009 and won the competition in 2011 and 2015, and came second in 2013, 2014 and 2021. It is an extremely enjoyable event and we would like to enter a strong Regimental team this year and get our name back on the trophy.
- 10 October 2024 – The Autumn Meeting at Upavon Golf Club.
