60th MALTA INDEPENDENCE DAY

.60 years ago, the 1st Bn The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire & Wiltshire's) took part in Malta's Independence Day on the 21st September 1964. In order to celebrate this occasion and to bring back many memories, I have arranged with the AFM, (Armed Forces Malta) to play our Regimental March (FARMERSBOY). Both, myself and Dennis (Hank) Barnes have taken it upon ourselves to represent our regiment by attending the Church Service in St John's Cathedral. This service will also be attended by the President and Prime Minister of Malta, along with many other dignitary guests.

I hope to post photo's of the occasion to this site after the event.

Mr Barry Shears.

Capt Bill Sherman, Wiltshire County Chairman, has informed the Association of the death of Ex Cpl Barry Shears in June this year at the age of 79. Mr Shears served with 1 DERR and was injured in the Ballykinler Bomb on 28 October 1974 (see below).  In spite of his own injuries, Cpl Shears carried a very severely injured comrade, who was bleeding profusely, out of the destroyed Sandes Home and thus undoubtedly saved his life.
